Origin Pro 8.0 on Ubuntu

with 2 comments

As I have to share my PC at university with some users who are used to windows software, I had to find a solution for fixing a wine bug concerning Origin’s submenus not expanding, like the convert to matrix one. The solution is actually quite simple:

Download msxml3.dll, msxml3r.dll and comdlg32.dll and put them in the origin folder usually located in your home directory under ~/.wine/drive_c/programs/…
Now run winecfg, „libraries“ tab, and set those three dlls to native (Windows) and voilá, menus should just work. Tested under Ubuntu 9.04 using wine 1.01.

Compiz strangeness

leave a comment »

I just bought a Asus P5E-VM board, sporting a nice G35 onboard Intel graphics accelerator, a Q9550 and 4GB of RAM running on latest (all updates installed) Ubuntu Hardy. I experience a dramatic drop of system power when using compiz. Is this due to EXA render acceleration not yet really supported in the 2.2.1 intel graphics driver or should I worry? ^^
compiz

I think you can guess when I turned compiz off 😉
