DCRaw 8.21/1.330 Binaries
Dave changed the following:
- 1.330:
- Fixed the filter pattern on the Micron 2010.
- 1.329:
- Added the Sony XCD-SX910CR and Micron 2010 sensors.
- Added camera WB for the Kodak DCS Pro 14* models.
- After scale_colors(), use “65535″ instead of “maximum”.

Microsoft plant neues Bildformat
Ähnlich wie MS es schon bei WMA behauptet hat, soll das neue Bildformat bei halber Größe die gleiche Qualität wie ein entsprechendes Bild haben, das nach dem JPEG Standard komprimiert wurde. Dass das Marketinggeblubber ist sollte jedem klar, denn das “halbe Größe, gleiche Qualität” Argument sehen wir leider viel zu oft. Es bleibt abzuwarten in wie weit diese Behauptungen zutreffen, in wie weit das Format mit DRM eingeschränkt wird/werden kann und wie offen der Standard sein wird. Da es das Format nur für XP und Vista geben wird sind Benutzer älterer Betriebssysteme von vorneherein ausgeschlossen, auch wage ich zu bezweifeln, dass es baldige Unterstützung für Betriebssystem wie Linux oder Mac geben wird. Wenn aber die ganzen Newbies sich nicht darum kümmern, wie sie ihre Bilder mit dem Bildeditor von MS abspeichern, könnte sich das Format evtl. durchsetzen.
Meine Meinung: Wir brauchen kein weiteres proprietäres Bildformat sondern offene Standards wie DNG.

Softwarepatente endgültig vom Tisch?
Mit großem Erstaunen habe ich gestern den betreffenden Artikel auf theinquirer.net [1] gelesen und konnte zuerst gar nicht glauben was da steht so unvorstellbar ist es. So wie es aussieht hat die EU Kommision eine komplette Kehrtwende vollzogen und will nun beim anstehenden Gemeinschaftspatent Software von vorneherein ausschließen. Damit wäre es dann EU Gesetz und alle Patentämter müssten sich daran halten. Evtl. würde das europäische Patentamt dann endlich damit aufhören unrechtmäßig auf Software Patente zu vergeben. Es bleibt abzuwarten, wie sich die Geschichte entwickelt, denn so ganz bin ich nicht überzeugt. Die Lobby der Softwarepatentbefürworter ist nicht klein und vorallem eins nicht, arm!

DCRaw 8.19/1.328 Binaries
Dave changed the following:

- Changed the “-H” option so the user can control color spread.
-H 2-9: Reconstruct highlights. Low numbers favor whites; high numbers favor colors. Try -H 5 as a compromise. If that’s not good enough, do -H 9, cut out the non-white highlights, and paste them into an image generated with -H 3.

New highlight recovery in dcraw 8.18/1.326
Dave rewrote the complete highlight recovery algorithm in dcraw 8.18 so I tested it again:
The wall above the red bar is supposed to be white.
The shoulder is getting better but we’re not there yet.
You can see the behaviour changed in most samples but I’m not completely sure if it’s an improvement so I won’t create new binaries unless some of you would like to test it themselves. I’m already in touch with Dave.
New highlight recovery in dcraw 8.17/1.325
As mentioned in the blog entry about the new DCRaw binaries Dave added a new highlight recovery option activated with -H 2. I did a small and not very scientific test to preview the new functionality.
No mouse = dcraw 1.325 -w; Mouse over = dcraw 1.325 -w -H 2
There are of course problematic samples too
You can clearly see the improvements in highlight areas. There are some teething problems and the images look darker overall, but as Dave described this change as “rudimentary” we can surely expect more soon. Nontheless I’m already excited about the direction dcraw is heading 
UFRaw 0.8.1 veröffentlicht
Kurz nach 0.8 kommt ein Bugfixrelease 0.8.1, der zwei Probleme beseitigt und auf die DCRaw Version aktualisiert. Besitzer einer Canon Kamera sollten zudem überprüfen, ob die Weißabgleich Werte noch stimmen, da Dave in der letzten DCRaw Version die Routinen zum Ermitteln dieser verändert hat!
UFRaw-0.8.1 released, based on DCRaw v8.15.
- Fix Gimp plug-in half-interpolation crash.
- Fix possible crash in auto-exposure.
DCRaw 8.17/1.325 Binaries

- Replaced “-r” and “-l” options with raw white balance.
- Added “-H 2″ option for rudimentary highlight recovery.

UFRaw 0.8 veröffentlicht
Nachdem es von Version 0.6 auf 0.7 etwas länger gedauert hat kommt das Update auf 0.8 etwas früher. Da das CVS seit ein paar Wochen nicht errreichbar ist, konnte Version 0.8 nicht so ausgiebig wie vorige Versionen getestet werden. Ich habe jedoch noch keine Bugs erkennen können. Geändert hat sich folgendes:
UFRaw-0.8 released, based on DCRaw v8.13:
- Preliminary zoom support, only up to 50% and with no scrolling.
- Auto white balance is much faster.
- Auto exposure is smarter, and hopefully better.
- Auto black and auto curve are much faster.
- EXIF data of Canon CRW files can be read using Exiv2 (not enabled by default).
- EXIF data of Fuji RAF files can be read using libexif (not enabled by default).
- White balance presets for more cameras.
- Fix the bug that sometimes caused a ‘maze effect’.
- A few minor bug fixes.
